PRACTICAL GUIDE

Gel colour, regular polish or added structure?

Choose the appointment category before you choose the shade.

BY DA NANG BEAUTY GUIDE · UPDATED 16 OCTOBER 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Choose based on the result and the removal plan: a colour finish, extra structure or extra length. Gel polish and builder gel are different categories; a gel-like appearance does not by itself identify a product. Ask the salon to name the proposed service and explain the finish, preparation and removal before you book.

The decision is not simply “which lasts longest?”

Your preferred finish, existing product, available appointment time and next removal appointment all matter. A service that fits one traveller’s itinerary may not fit another’s. Start by stating whether you want to keep your natural length, add structure, add length or simply change colour.

Read product descriptions rather than labels on social media

OPI’s product guide separates gel polish for colour from builder gel for structure. Marketing labels in a saved photo are not proof of what another salon will use. Ask the receiving salon to identify its own system. This guide does not claim LENA uses a particular OPI product.

Ask about the complete visit

A plain colour appointment and a structural service with decoration can require different work. Existing product can also change the plan. Ask for the whole appointment estimate, and confirm whether any proposed removal or fill is additional.

Use the comparison as a consultation brief

The table below describes booking goals, not a technical prescription or a promise of wear time. If you are unsure about your existing set, share a current photo and ask for a consultation. Let the salon explain which menu item fits the requested result.

Keep the next step in mind

Ask how the applied product should be removed and record its name. If you are travelling onward, you will have a clearer starting point with a future salon. Avoid choosing a service from a claimed universal wear duration; the specific product and individual circumstances matter.

Questions before you book

Does gel-like polish mean a gel manicure?

Not necessarily. Ask the salon to identify the product and explain how it is applied and removed.

Is builder gel just another colour?

No. OPI distinguishes builder gel as a structural product category, separate from gel polish for colour.

Can this guide choose a product for my nails?

No. It helps you describe the result; a salon should assess your existing nails and explain its offered service.
